9 Best Christmas Markets in Europe for a Winter Road Trip
October 15, 2026

Why Visit Europe's Christmas Markets by Campervan?
Imagine spending the afternoon wandering through a beautifully decorated old town, warming your hands around a mug of mulled wine and trying local Christmas treats. And when you've had enough of the cold, you head back to your camper, put on some cosy socks and settle in for the evening. Sounds pretty good, doesn't it?
The best thing about a Christmas market road trip is that you don't have to choose just one destination.
Many of Europe's most beautiful Christmas markets are only a few hours apart, making them perfect for a short winter getaway or a longer road trip. You could explore the festive villages of Alsace, continue through Germany's historic towns and finish your journey in Austria, surrounded by the Alps. And because you're travelling with your own accommodation, you can stay longer in places you love and discover smaller Christmas markets along the way.
Here are some of our favourite destinations to add to your winter road trip.
1. Strasbourg, France - The Capital of Christmas 🇫🇷
If there's one city that really knows how to celebrate Christmas, it's Strasbourg.
Every December, its historic centre transforms into a magical world of lights, decorations and traditional market stalls.
The famous Strasbourg Christmas market is one of the oldest in Europe, with a history dating back to 1570.
You'll find festive stalls around the impressive cathedral, beautifully decorated half-timbered houses and charming streets filled with the smell of Christmas treats.
One of the nicest things to do is wander through the Petite France neighbourhood in the late afternoon, just as the Christmas lights begin to glow.
What to try: Alsatian Christmas biscuits (Bredele), tarte flambée and traditional mulled wine.
Where to stay with camper:
Camping in Strassbourg. Open all year, in a good distance to the city.

Our recommendation:
Combine Strasbourg with Colmar and the smaller Christmas villages along the Alsace Wine Route. We'd recommend at least three or four days for this region.
2. Colmar, France - A Real-Life Christmas Fairytale 🇫🇷
Colmar looks like something out of a storybook at any time of year. But during the Christmas season, it becomes even more magical. Colourful half-timbered houses, narrow cobbled streets, little canals and beautifully decorated shop windows make it one of the most atmospheric Christmas destinations in Europe.
Instead of one large market, Colmar has several smaller Christmas markets spread across its historic centre.
The area around Little Venice is particularly beautiful after dark.
What to try: Gingerbread, Alsatian Christmas biscuits and warm spiced apple juice.
Where to stay with camper:
Port Plaisance - Colmar is best explored on foot, this RV park is only 1 km from the city centre. Open all year, offers all facilities.
3. Nuremberg, Germany - A Christmas Market Classic 🇩🇪

If you're looking for a traditional German Christmas market, Nuremberg should be high on your list!
The famous Christkindlesmarkt takes place in the city's historic main square, surrounded by beautiful old buildings.
Rows of red-and-white market stalls sell handmade decorations, traditional sweets, roasted nuts and Christmas gifts. The atmosphere is especially beautiful in the evening, when the lights illuminate the square.
What to try: Nuremberg gingerbread (Lebkuchen) and the city's famous small grilled sausages.
Where to stay with camper:
Knaus Camping Nürnberg - Opened all year, clean facilities and good connection to the city. On-site restaurant/bistro and fresh bread service.

5. Prague, Czech Republic - Christmas Among Medieval Towers 🇨🇿
Prague's historic old town feels made for Christmas. With its Gothic towers, colourful buildings and narrow streets, the city becomes especially atmospheric when the Christmas lights come on.
The most famous Christmas market takes place in Old Town Square, with a large Christmas tree and views of the impressive Church of Our Lady before Týn.
It's one of those places where you'll probably spend more time taking photos than you originally planned.
What to try: Traditional Czech Christmas pastries, and langosh.
Where to stay with camper:
Camping in Prague - Campsite on an island in Prague, owners will bring you to the city by boat.

6. Dresden, Germany - Christmas Traditions and Historic Charm 🇩🇪

Dresden is home to one of Germany's oldest and most traditional Christmas markets.
The famous Striezelmarkt is known for its festive decorations, wooden Christmas pyramids, handmade crafts and, of course, Dresden Christmas stollen. You'll find beautiful Christmas gifts here, especially traditional wooden decorations from the nearby Ore Mountains.
The historic old town is also worth exploring, with landmarks such as the Frauenkirche and Semper Opera House.
What to try: Dresden Christmas stollen and traditional gingerbread.
Where to stay with camper:

Facilities include electricity, fresh water, waste disposal, and toilets. Parking costs €25 per night, with cashless payment required.
7. Salzburg, Austria - Christmas with an Alpine Backdrop 🇦🇹
Salzburg is a beautiful destination at any time of year, but there's something particularly special about visiting in December.
The historic old town, charming squares and surrounding mountains create the perfect setting for a Christmas market.
The traditional Christkindlmarkt around Cathedral Square and Residence Square is filled with festive decorations, regional food and Christmas music.
And with the Alps nearby, you can easily combine your Christmas market visit with a winter walk or a trip into the mountains.
What to try: Austrian Christmas biscuits, roasted almonds and hot punch.
Where to stay with camper:
Salzburg Panorama Camping-Stadtblick - Campsite with a panoramic view on the mountains and the city. You can take the bus to the city.
8. Tallinn, Estonia - A Medieval Winter Wonderland 🇪🇪
Looking for something a little different? Tallinn is one of Europe's most magical winter destinations.
Its medieval old town, historic towers and cobbled streets look particularly beautiful during the Christmas season.
The Christmas market takes place in Town Hall Square, surrounded by colourful historic buildings. And if you're lucky enough to visit when there's snow, the entire city looks like a winter fairytale. ❄️
What to try: Estonian Christmas dishes, gingerbread and warm spiced drinks.

9. Budapest, Hungary - Christmas Lights and Thermal Baths 🇭🇺
Budapest is a fantastic choice if you want to combine Christmas markets with a proper city break.
One of the most famous markets takes place in front of St. Stephen's Basilica, where the illuminated church creates a beautiful backdrop. You'll find festive stalls, Hungarian specialities and plenty of Christmas decorations.
And when the temperatures drop, there's another reason to visit Budapest: its famous thermal baths. What could be better than spending a cold winter afternoon soaking in warm thermal water?
What to try: Lángos, Hungarian Christmas treats and chimney cake (Kürtőskalács).
Where to stay with camper:
Haller Camping - Campsite in the city, only couple stations away from the city centre. 24/7 monitored. Dogs are welcomed.

Our recommendation:
Combine Budapest with Vienna and Bratislava for a festive road trip through Central Europe.
How to Plan a Christmas Market Road Trip by Campervan
1. Plan Your Route with CampPilot
Already know which Christmas markets you'd like to visit, but not sure how to connect them?
With CampPilot, you can plan your Christmas market road trip without spending hours researching routes, overnight stops and places to visit. Simply tell your Co-Pilot where you'd like to go, how long you're travelling and what you'd like to experience.
For example: "Plan a five-day Christmas market road trip through Alsace. I want to visit Strasbourg, Colmar and a few smaller Christmas villages, find suitable campsites and avoid driving more than two hours per day."
CampPilot helps you create a route with interesting stops, activities and suitable campsites or motorhome stopovers.
You can adjust your itinerary, add new destinations and plan a trip that fits your travel style.

2. Prepare Your Campervan for Cold Weather
Winter camping can be incredibly cosy, but your camper needs to be ready for freezing temperatures. Before leaving, check your heating system, gas supply, batteries and water installation. If temperatures drop below freezing, water tanks and pipes can freeze unless they're properly protected. Winter tyres and, depending on your destination, snow chains may also be necessary.
Camper tip: Don't underestimate how much gas you'll use when heating your camper throughout the day and night.
3. Visit Christmas Markets During the Week
Popular Christmas markets in Strasbourg, Nuremberg and Vienna can get extremely busy during Advent weekends. If your schedule is flexible, visit during the week. You'll often find fewer crowds, shorter queues and a more relaxed atmosphere.
Our favourite time to explore is late afternoon, when daylight slowly fades and the Christmas lights come on.
