October - March
This is a proper Arctic road trip. Nearly 2,000 km through Finnish Lapland, from the Arctic Circle in Rovaniemi to the remote trails of Lemmenjoki and the shores of Lake Inari.
You’ll drive through wide-open tundra, quiet forest roads, and small northern villages where life moves slowly. Some days are about hiking and exploring. Others are just about finding a good place to park your camper and watching the sky change.
It’s not about rushing between stops. It’s about long drives with barely any traffic, cooking dinner outside your van, hiking in national parks, and staying up late in autumn hoping the sky turns green.
This trip works especially well for campers because you can take it slow - and Lapland rewards slow travel. It’s raw, spacious, and peaceful - exactly what a northern road trip should be.
✔ Camp beside Lake Inari under the midnight sun
✔ Watch the Northern Lights from your camper bed
✔ Take a sauna by a remote lake
✔ Hike to the top of a fell for panoramic tundra views
✔ Try gold panning in Lemmenjoki
✔ Photograph reindeer wandering freely
✔ Cook dinner over an open fire at a laavu (Finnish lean-to shelter)
✔ Drive through endless autumn colors (ruska season)
✔ Experience 24-hour daylight in summer
✔ Spend a night in complete Arctic silence
During this Arctic journey, there is one moment you look forward to more than any other. The silence. The frost. The dark, star-filled sky. And then suddenly - a green light begins to dance along the horizon.
The Northern Lights in Finnish Lapland are not a tourist attraction. They are an experience. Something that stops conversations, quiets your thoughts, and makes you simply stand there (or sit inside your warm campervan) and watch.
Traveling by camper gives you a huge advantage here. You’re not tied to one place. You can drive to wherever the forecast is best. You can park far away from city lights. You can watch the sky from your bed, through the panoramic window, holding a cup of hot tea in your hands.
The best time to watch the Northern Lights in Finnish Lapland is: Late September to early April
